STATE LIBRARY OF NSW

The most substantial collection of church records relating to the western coast of Cape York is in the Uniting Church in Australia Commission for Mission records.

The principal catalogue entry is:

Uniting Church in Australia

Commission for Mission records 1891-1982

The agencies which preceded the Uniting Church in Australia Commission for Mission - and who made the original deposits into the Mitchell Library are the:

(Presbyterian) Board of Ecumenical Mission and Relation known by the acronym BOEMAR,

and the Australian Presbyterian Board of Missions.

The call numbers are ML MSS 1893, with a subsequent deposit with the call number of ML 1872.

The collection consists of some 132 boxes.

Permission from the Uniting Church Assembly Archivist is required for accessing the collection.

Contents list available in the Special Collections area, Mitchell Library.

I have used this collection extensively since the mid-1970s. It is easy to access, the library staff are inordinately helpful, and the Reading Room is open 9 to 6 Monday to Thursday, and 9 to 5 Friday, 10-5 Saturday. One of the most accessible libraries in the country.
