Queensland Government Records

Located at 435 Compton Road, Runcorn, the Queensland State Archives contains all Queensland Government records since 1859, including many maps and photographs as well as documents.

Of most interest are the files relating to government dealings with the missions at Mapoon (1891-1963), Weipa (1898-1966), and Aurukun (1904-1978), and the government’s own management of these communities after mission administration ceased.

Also of interest and documents relating to the establishment of Somerset in 1864, at the initiative of Governor Bowen.

Records relating to land title: pastoral leases, mining leases and some early native title records are largely unexplored.

Navigation of the collection can be complex.
