Hey Family Collection

The collection comprises a range of objects relating to the donors's grandparents' involvement with the Mapoon mission at Cape York, in the 1890s. Of particular significance are a number of craft objects made by the Indigenous people living at Mapoon mission. The accompanying photographs, pamplets, brochures and family documents give insight into the history of the mission and lives of the missionaries.

Mapoon mission was established in1891 at Cullen Point on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula on the traditional lands of the Tjungundji people. The collection reflects the experience of European settlers in remote parts of Australia, and the relationship between the Mission and Aboriginal people in the surrounding area. It also demonstrates an aspect of the activities of the early establishment of the Presbyterian Church in Australia.
